Cahors is one of the most captivating cities in South-West France. Prefecture of the Lot department, it is enclosed within a spectacular meander of the Lot river, which forms an almost perfect loop around the medieval old town. Its most iconic monument is the Pont Valentré, a masterpiece of medieval military architecture: this 14th-century fortified bridge, with its three crenellated towers, is one of the finest and best-preserved in Europe, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela. The legend of the devil, who allegedly helped build the bridge, is immortalised by a small devil sculpture on one of the towers. The Saint-Étienne Cathedral, with its monumental Romanesque cupolas and sculptured Last Judgement portal, is another jewel. The medieval quarter abounds with lanes, Renaissance townhouses and the secret Daurade garden by the Lot. But Cahors is above all the world capital of Malbec (or Côt), the black grape variety producing powerful, dark and tannic wines, nicknamed 'the black wine of Cahors'. The Cahors AOC appellation extends over the limestone hillsides of the Lot valley, and the qualitative renaissance of the vineyard since the 2000s has propelled the best estates (Clos Triguedina, Château Lagrezette, Clos de Gamot) onto the international stage. Argentina's Mendoza vineyard, now the world's largest Malbec producer, owes its grape to Cahors, from where it was imported in the 19th century.
Route
Route Bordeaux → Cahors
From Bordeaux, your driver takes the southern ring road then the A62 (Autoroute des Deux Mers) towards Toulouse. You cross the Garonne at Langon, then the Lot-et-Garonne department (Marmande, Agen). After Agen, take the A20 towards Montauban-Cahors. The A20 follows the Lot valley through the Quercy blanc hills: limestone plateau landscapes, green valleys and hilltop villages. The Cahors-Nord or Cahors-Sud exit appears after about 2h15 of motorway. Arrival in Cahors immediately reveals the exceptional setting: the town enclosed within the Lot meander, overlooked by Mont Saint-Cyr. Total tolls (A62 + A20) amount to approximately €20. The journey is smooth, the A20 being lightly trafficked between Agen and Cahors.

Specific tips for the Bordeaux → Cahors route
The Pont Valentré is Cahors' symbol: walk across it (free access) and look for the little devil carved on the central tower! Visiting Saint-Étienne Cathedral (free) is a must: the Romanesque cupolas and sculptured north portal are exceptional. The medieval quarter is best explored on foot: lanes, townhouses, secret Daurade garden. For wine, Cahors appellation estates open their doors: Clos Triguedina, Château Lagrezette (spectacular architecture), Clos de Gamot (the oldest Cahors estate, same family since 1610). The Cahors market (Wednesday and Saturday mornings, Place de la Cathédrale) is one of the Lot's finest: black truffles (December-March), foie gras, Rocamadour AOC (goat cheese), Périgord walnuts, Quercy saffron. The Cahors Blues Festival (July) animates the old town for a week.
