Sallanches is the last major town in the Arve valley before entering the Mont-Blanc sanctuary. At 550 metres altitude at the foot of the Fiz range, Sallanches offers one of the most complete panoramas of the Mont-Blanc massif in the entire region. The Château des Rubins houses an alpine nature centre, while the arcaded place Charles-Albert forms the town's living heart. The taxi ride to Chamonix along the Route Blanche N205 is one of the most spectacular in the region, passing through Passy with its famous church decorated by Léger, Chagall, Matisse and Bonnard, then Servoz with its dramatic Diosaz gorges, and Les Houches, the authentic village at the start of the legendary Tour du Mont-Blanc trail.

Route

Route Sallanches → Chamonix

The route from Sallanches follows the Route Blanche N205, the main road connecting the Arve valley to Chamonix. Leaving Sallanches, you cross Passy with gradually unfolding views of the Bossons glacier and Dôme du Goûter. The road passes through Servoz, nestled above the Diosaz gorges, then Les Houches, a family resort with wooden chalets and the Prarion cable car. The entry into Chamonix is spectacular: the valley opens before the Aiguille du Midi (3,842 m), the Bossons glacier descending to the valley floor, and the summit of Mont-Blanc (4,808 m). The driver drops you in central Chamonix, at your hotel, chalet or directly at the ski lifts.

Specific tips for the Sallanches → Chamonix route

On Saturday changeover days (early December, late February, Easter, early July), the N205 between Sallanches and Chamonix is often jammed with holidaymakers. Depart early morning (before 8am) or early afternoon (after 2pm) to avoid the worst congestion. In winter, the road can be snowy between Servoz and Les Houches — our vehicles always carry winter tyres and our drivers are experienced. For skiers, pickup at Sallanches is convenient if arriving by train (Sallanches SNCF station) or the A40 motorway.
