Toulon, the capital of the Var department and home to France's principal naval base, lies 70 kilometres west of Saint-Tropez along one of the most beautiful stretches of the Mediterranean coast. While Saint-Tropez embodies the glamour of yacht-filled harbours, the legendary place des Lices cafe scene and the golden sands of Pampelonne beach, Toulon offers a different Riviera experience centred on its magnificent natural harbour — one of the finest in the world — where the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and the French Navy fleet are stationed. The taxi journey crosses the wild heart of the Maures massif and winds past the perched villages of Bormes-les-Mimosas and Le Lavandou, with spectacular views of the Hyeres Islands — Porquerolles, Port-Cros and the Ile du Levant. This transfer is especially popular with travellers catching TGV trains from Toulon to Paris or Lyon, and cruise passengers boarding at Toulon-La Seyne port.
Route
Route Saint-Tropez → Toulon
From Saint-Tropez, the route follows the D98A to La Foux, then heads west on the D559 coastal road through Cogolin, La Croix-Valmer and the Rayol-Canadel gardens designed by Gilles Clement. The road winds along the cliffs between Cavalaire-sur-Mer and Le Lavandou with sweeping views of the sea and the Golden Islands. After Bormes-les-Mimosas, you join the D98 dual carriageway and then the A57 motorway directly into Toulon centre. The interior route through Collobrieres and the heart of the Maures massif is shorter in distance but not necessarily faster due to the mountain road.

Specific tips for the Saint-Tropez → Toulon route
The trickiest section is leaving Saint-Tropez in summer. From June to September, the D98A between the port and La Foux is regularly gridlocked, especially on Fridays and Sundays. Depart before 8:30am or after 7:30pm to avoid the worst. The D559 coast road between La Croix-Valmer and Le Lavandou can also slow down in midsummer but remains generally flowing outside peak hours. If catching a TGV in Toulon, add at least 30 minutes of buffer in high season. For an excursion, combine the journey with a boat trip to Porquerolles from La Tour Fondue in Hyeres, halfway between Saint-Tropez and Toulon.
