The Millau to Clermont-Ferrand taxi journey follows the entire A75 Meridienne, France's only toll-free motorway, through the most spectacular landscapes of the Massif Central. It begins with the crossing of the Millau Viaduct, the world's tallest road bridge designed by Norman Foster, surrounded by the UNESCO-listed Grands Causses. The route passes near the Roquefort caves where the famous cheese ages in natural limestone fissures, and the Gorges du Tarn, a 500-metre-deep canyon of extraordinary beauty. Climbing through the Margeride and Aubrac highlands, where herds of the distinctive Aubrac cattle graze on windswept plateaux at over 1,100 metres, the road reaches Saint-Flour, a medieval episcopal city perched on a volcanic basalt spur. The descent toward Clermont-Ferrand reveals the Auvergne volcanoes in all their majesty: the Cantal massif, Europe's largest stratovolcano, the Sancy at 1,886 metres, and the UNESCO-listed Chaine des Puys, an alignment of 80 dormant volcanoes crowned by the Puy de Dome. Clermont-Ferrand, built from black Volvic lava stone, is home to Michelin and a uniquely dark Gothic cathedral.

Route Millau → Clermont-Ferrand
Your driver takes the A75, entirely toll-free except the Millau Viaduct (about 10 euros, included). The route crosses the Grands Causses, climbs through the Margeride plateau at 1,100-1,200 metres altitude, passes Saint-Flour on its basalt spur, then descends with exceptional views of the Auvergne volcanoes: the Cantal massif, the Sancy and the Chaine des Puys. Allow 2h20 normally, more in winter when snow may cover the high plateaux above 1,000 metres. The taxi is always equipped with winter tyres or chains.

Specific tips for the Millau → Clermont-Ferrand route
Ask for a stop at Saint-Flour halfway, a fascinating hilltop town with a black volcanic cathedral. In Clermont-Ferrand, the Panoramique des Domes rack railway (15 euros return) takes you to the summit of the Puy de Dome for stunning views of the entire volcanic chain. Notre-Dame-du-Port basilica (UNESCO, Romanesque, free entry) is a gem. The black lava cathedral is unique in France. Vulcania science park (30 euros) is great for families, 15 km from the city. In winter, the taxi is far safer than driving yourself on these mountain roads.
