Nancy is the former capital of the Duchy of Lorraine, a city of art whose absolute jewel is the Place Stanislas, UNESCO World Heritage listed and regularly voted the world's most beautiful square. Created between 1751 and 1755 by Stanislas Leszczynski (Louis XV's father-in-law and last Duke of Lorraine), this monumental rocaille ensemble unites Place Stanislas, Place de la Carrière and Place d'Alliance in a masterpiece of Enlightenment urbanism. Jean Lamour's gold-highlighted wrought iron gates and Emmanuel Héré's Neptune fountain are dazzlingly beautiful, especially illuminated at night. Nancy is also the world capital of Art Nouveau, with the École de Nancy (Émile Gallé, Louis Majorelle, Victor Prouvé, Antonin Daum) producing exceptional glassware, furniture and ironwork at the turn of the 20th century. The Musée de l'École de Nancy (Villa Corbin) and the Fine Arts Museum (Place Stanislas) are must-visits.
