The taxi ride between Fontainebleau and Nemours connects the imperial city to one of the most charming small towns in southern Seine-et-Marne. Nemours, nestled in the valley of the Loing river, is dominated by its imposing 12th-century medieval castle, one of the rare urban fortified castles remaining in Ile-de-France. Surrounded by moats fed by the Loing, the castle now houses the municipal museum with collections of art and local history. Nemours is also home to the Ile-de-France Departmental Prehistory Museum, set within a striking modernist building designed by architect Roland Simounet amid a botanical garden. This museum holds the most significant prehistoric collections in the region, from the earliest stone tools (300,000 years old) to Neolithic remains. The town is bisected by the Loing, a tributary of the Seine, which gives it a bucolic charm with its shaded riverbanks, stone bridges, and ancient houses reflected in the water. The Canal du Loing, running parallel to the river, offers delightful walks along the towpath. Nemours also serves as the gateway to the French Gatinais, a terroir renowned for honey (Gatinais honey was celebrated as far back as the Middle Ages), saffron, and artisanal local produce. This short taxi route is popular with Fontainebleau residents heading to the markets, running administrative errands, or catching train connections.
