The Épinal — Strasbourg journey is a spectacular crossing of the Vosges mountains, one of eastern France's finest routes. Épinal, the City of Images at the foot of the Vosges, and Strasbourg, European capital and Alsatian jewel, are separated by the great Vosges mountain barrier covered in fir, beech and spruce forests. The Vosges massif, with its rounded summits reaching 1,424 metres at Grand Ballon, its deep-blue glacial lakes and mountain pastures, offers some of France's most enchanting mid-mountain landscapes. The road crosses the Vosges via the Donon pass or Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines tunnel before descending into the Alsace plain where a different landscape unfolds: terraced vineyards, geranium-adorned half-timbered villages and medieval castles perched on rocky outcrops. Strasbourg is a city like no other in France, home to the European Parliament and Council of Europe, with its UNESCO-listed Grande Île, its 142-metre pink sandstone cathedral and its Petite France quarter of half-timbered houses reflected in the Ill's canals.
