Mâcon is a city of 35,000 inhabitants, prefecture of Saône-et-Loire, stretching along the Saône in a luminous setting already evoking the south of France. Birthplace of Romantic poet Alphonse de Lamartine (1790-1869), whose memory is everywhere — Ursulines Museum, Hôtel de Senecé, statue on the quay — Mâcon is best known as the capital of the Mâconnais wine region. The white wines of Pouilly-Fuissé, Pouilly-Vinzelles and Saint-Véran, made from chardonnay grapes on limestone soils, are among the finest whites of Burgundy. The Rock of Solutré, a 493-metre limestone spur rising above the vineyards, is the Mâconnais's iconic image: a major prehistoric site (Prehistory Museum at its base), it offers exceptional panoramas of the Alps, Beaujolais and the Bresse. Mâcon is also the northern gateway to Beaujolais, whose crus (Moulin-à-Vent, Fleurie, Saint-Amour) begin just a few kilometres south. Taxis from Dijon are popular with wine tourists, TGV connecting passengers (Mâcon-Loché TGV station) and hikers heading to Solutré.

Route

Route Dijon → Mâcon

From Dijon, your driver takes the A31 towards Lyon for about 35 km to Beaune, then switches to the A6 (Autoroute du Soleil) following it towards Lyon for 85 km. This is one of the most beautiful stretches of motorway in France: you cross the entire Burgundy Coast, with the Côte de Beaune then Côte Chalonnaise vineyards visible on the western hillsides. After Chalon-sur-Saône, you enter the Mâconnais: the landscape becomes more rolling, with perched villages and Romanesque bell towers typical of southern Burgundy. The Rock of Solutré appears on the left, spectacular, before the Mâcon-Nord exit. The descent towards Mâcon offers a view of the Saône, the city and the Beaujolais hills in the background. The journey takes 1h20 in normal conditions. Tolls total about €10, included in the fare. The A6 can be very busy during summer holiday departures (July-August Saturdays), adding up to 45 minutes.

Specific tips for the Dijon → Mâcon route

The Rock of Solutré is unmissable: the climb (30 min, marked trail from the car park) offers an exceptional 360° panorama in clear weather (Mont Blanc visible). The Prehistory Museum at the base (€5) is very interesting. For wines, the Pouilly-Fuissé cooperative cellar in Chaintré offers tastings. The Quai Lamartine in Mâcon along the Saône is lined with terrace restaurants — ideal for a waterside meal. The Ursulines Museum (free) presents Lamartine's life and Gallo-Roman archaeological collections. Mâcon market (Saturday mornings, Esplanade Lamartine) is one of the liveliest in southern Burgundy. In November, the Sarmentelles de Beaujeu (north of Mâcon) celebrate Beaujolais Nouveau. Mâcon-Loché TGV station (4 km from the centre) connects to Paris in 1h40.
