The Charleville-Mézières — Paris journey is a complete crossing of northeastern France, from the deep Ardennes forests to the capital's boulevards. Charleville-Mézières, Rimbaud's birthplace nestled in a bend of the Meuse, is the starting point for a journey through two of France's finest regions. The French Ardennes, the country's most forested department with over 50% tree cover, is a land of legends and grand landscapes. The Ardennes forest is the setting for the medieval legends of the four Aymon sons and the horse Bayard. The Place Ducale, an architectural jewel built between 1606 and 1624 by architect Clément Métezeau, is one of France's most harmonious arcaded squares. Arthur Rimbaud, born at 12 rue Napoléon in 1854, has imbued the city with his poetic presence: the Quai Rimbaud, the Rimbaud Museum and his grave at Mézières cemetery are literary pilgrimage sites. The road to Paris then descends through the Ardennes plateau, passes Rethel, enters the vast Champagne plain, skirts Reims and its prestigious vineyards, and continues through the Marne valley to Paris.
