Saint-Jean-de-Luz is one of the most beautiful fishing ports on the Basque coast, world-famous for the marriage of Louis XIV to the Infanta Marie-Thérèse of Austria in 1660 in the Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste. This church, with its monumental gilded altarpiece and painted wooden galleries, is a masterpiece of Basque art. The Maison Louis XIV and the Maison de l'Infante, facing the harbour, bear witness to this historic event. Saint-Jean-de-Luz is also an active fishing port: trawlers land tuna, anchovies, sardines and chipirons (squid) daily. The bay, protected by three breakwaters built under Napoleon III, offers one of the few sheltered beaches on the Basque coast, ideal for families. The pedestrianised Rue Gambetta is full of Basque fashion boutiques, pastry shops and artisan canneries.
