Agde was founded by Greeks from Phocaea in the 6th century BC as Agathé Tyché ('good fortune'), making it one of France's oldest cities. Its black basalt cathedral (volcanic stone from Mont Saint-Loup) is striking. The Canal du Midi passes through with its unique round lock, the only circular lock on the entire canal, allowing navigation in three directions. Cap d'Agde, built in the 1970s, is Europe's largest seaside resort by accommodation capacity, welcoming over 2 million holidaymakers each summer. Its 14 km of sandy beaches, the black volcanic sand beach of Grande Conque beneath basalt cliffs, aquarium, marina and Europe's largest naturist village make it a major tourist destination.
