Avon is the twin town of Fontainebleau, together forming an urban area of 37,000 inhabitants in Seine-et-Marne. It is in Avon that the Fontainebleau-Avon railway station (Transilien R) is located, making it the principal rail gateway to the entire area. The commune stretches from the edge of the national forest to the banks of the Loing river, offering a prized residential setting popular with families and executives who work in Paris or at the nearby INSEAD campus. The Avon market (Wednesday and Saturday mornings) is one of the liveliest in southern Seine-et-Marne. The town is also home to the Carmel d'Avon, where the philosopher Edith Stein was sheltered during the Second World War. Avon residents turn to taxis for journeys to Paris whenever the Transilien commuter train falls short: bulky luggage, off-peak schedules, late returns after the last train (around 10:30pm), or simply for the comfort of a door-to-door service without the walk to the station and the uncertainty of finding a seat.
