Dinan is one of France's finest medieval cities, perched on a rocky promontory 75 metres above the River Rance. Its 2.6 km of perfectly preserved ramparts, 15th and 16th-century half-timbered houses, cobbled streets and imposing ducal castle make it a jewel of Breton heritage. The Rue du Jerzual, cobbled and steep, links the upper town to the Rance port in a spectacular descent lined with art galleries, weavers' workshops and artisan shops. Dinan's port, on the Rance, is a peaceful haven with waterside restaurants, pleasure boats and the railway viaduct spanning the valley at great height. The Fête des Remparts, held every two years in July (even years), is one of Europe's largest medieval festivals, attracting 100,000 visitors in period costumes. Taxis from Rennes are used by heritage tourists, Rance valley hikers and Rennes locals on Sunday excursions.
