Font-Romeu is a unique resort in France: perched at 1,800 m in the Cerdagne — a sun-drenched high plateau straddling France and Spain — it enjoys over 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, making it the sunniest commune in France. This peculiarity led to the installation of the Odeillo solar furnace (1,000 kW, the world's most powerful) and the National Altitude Training Centre (CNEA), where French athletes prepare for the Olympics. Font-Romeu is also a family ski resort with 43 runs and exceptional cross-country skiing. In summer, it's a hiking paradise with Lac des Bouillouses and the Cerdagne pastures. Taxis from Perpignan are used by skiing families, CNEA athletes, and tourists discovering this lesser-known corner of the Pyrenees.
Route
Route Perpignan → Font-Romeu
From Perpignan, the N116 follows the Têt valley westward. The landscape evolves spectacularly: Roussillon wine plain, then the gorges of Villefranche-de-Conflent (Vauban-fortified town, UNESCO, recommended stop), and finally the climb to Cerdagne via the Col de la Perche. Villefranche-de-Conflent (halfway) deserves a stop — ramparts, Canalettes Cave and Fort Libéria offer a spectacular break. After Villefranche, the road climbs through pine forests with views of Mount Canigou (2,784 m, sacred mountain of the Catalans). Arriving in Cerdagne reveals a completely different landscape: a vast green plateau bathed in sunshine, framed by snow-capped peaks. No tolls. Journey takes 1h15, potentially 1h30 in winter if the road is snowy above 1,400 m.

Specific tips for the Perpignan → Font-Romeu route
In winter (December-March), the N116 can be snowy above Mont-Louis — winter tyres or chains are mandatory. Our vehicles are equipped. The Font-Romeu-Pyrénées 2000 ski area has 43 runs with guaranteed snow cover (500 snow cannons) and exceptional sunshine — you often ski in a t-shirt in March. The Odeillo solar furnace (free, 1h visit) is fascinating: a giant parabolic mirror concentrates light to reach 3,500°C. For hikers, Lac des Bouillouses (2,000 m) is accessible by shuttle from Mont-Louis in summer.
