The ZooSafari de Thoiry is a unique zoological park in France, founded in 1968 by Viscount Paul de La Panouse on the family estate of Château de Thoiry. The concept, revolutionary at the time, allowed visitors to drive through reserves where animals live in semi-freedom across vast grassy plains. Today, the car safari extends over 8 km through recreated African savannahs: visitors encounter lions, brown bears, African elephants, white rhinos, giraffes, zebras and wildebeest, separated by double-gate security systems. The walking zoo, covering 60 hectares, presents over 750 animals from 120 species, including a glass tunnel through the lion enclosure and a tropical greenhouse with free-roaming monkeys. The Château de Thoiry, built in 1559 by Philibert de l'Orme, is itself remarkable: it is oriented according to a unique solar alignment that allows the sun to shine through the vestibule from end to end at the summer and winter solstices, creating a 'bridge of light'.
