The Domaine national de Saint-Cloud is one of the hidden treasures of western Paris, a majestic 460-hectare park extending across the communes of Saint-Cloud, Sèvres, Ville-d'Avray and Marnes-la-Coquette in the Hauts-de-Seine department. The estate's history dates back to the 16th century when the Gondi family owned a château here. In 1658, Louis XIV bought the estate for his brother Philippe d'Orléans, known as Monsieur, who had the château and gardens transformed by Le Nôtre and Hardouin-Mansart. The gardens preserve from this era the Grande Cascade, a hydraulic masterpiece 90 metres high, and the Grande Gerbe, a fountain jet rising to 42 metres. The château was burned during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and its ruins demolished in 1891. Only the park remains, but what a park! Listed as a historic monument in 1923, it offers one of the finest panoramas in the Île-de-France from the Lanterne, a viewpoint at 160 metres elevation commanding a view of all Paris from the Eiffel Tower to the Sacré-Cœur. The Grandes Eaux, a fountain and cascade display inherited from the Grand Siècle, operates on certain Sundays from June to September. The estate also hosts the Rock en Seine festival each September and cultural events throughout the year. Getting to the Domaine de Saint-Cloud by taxi from Paris is ideal for being dropped at the entrance of your choice, as the estate has several access gates.

Route

Route Paris → Domaine de Saint-Cloud

Your TaxiNeo driver picks you up at your Paris address and reaches the Porte de Saint-Cloud via the western ring road or Boulevard Murat in the 16th arrondissement. Crossing the Pont de Saint-Cloud offers a magnificent view of the wooded hillsides overlooking the Seine. The park has several entrances: the main gate at the bottom of the park (closest to Paris, with the main car park), the Trocadéro garden gate on the Sèvres side, and the Porte Jaune gate at the top near Ville-d'Avray. Your driver drops you at the entrance best suited to your visit plan. For the Grande Cascade and lower park, the main gate is ideal. For the Lanterne viewpoint, the Porte Jaune is more practical. The journey is short (25 minutes on average) and entirely toll-free. An alternative route via the Quai d'Issy-les-Moulineaux and Boulogne-Billancourt is possible if the ring road is congested. The return can include a stop at the Sèvres Ceramics Museum, at the southern entrance of the estate.

Specific tips for the Paris → Domaine de Saint-Cloud route

The Domaine national de Saint-Cloud is open every day of the year: 7:30am-9pm in summer and 7:30am-8pm in winter. Pedestrian entry is free. Vehicle access is charged (€6 weekdays, €10 weekends) but by taxi, you are simply dropped at the entrance. The Grandes Eaux operate on certain Sundays from June to September (check the CMN website for dates) and offer a magical 30-minute display with successive activation of the Grande Cascade, Grand Jet and 24 fountains. The best views of Paris are from the Lanterne and the château terrace (site of the former château). The Trocadéro garden features a rose garden with 2,500 roses of 70 varieties, flowering May to October. For families, the playground near the main gate is well equipped. Le Petit Chalet, the only refreshment point, is in the centre of the park. Wear good shoes as the park is very hilly. The Grande Cascade can be visited freely and is impressive even when the fountains are not running. The Rock en Seine festival in late August transforms the lower park into a concert venue for 3 days.
