Fos-sur-Mer, a town of 16,000 in the Bouches-du-Rhône, occupies a unique position between the Gulf of Fos, the Étang de l'Estomac and the Crau plain. The town is primarily known for its industrial port zone (ZIP), the largest port and industrial complex in the Mediterranean: France's leading port by tonnage, the Grand Port Maritime de Marseille-Fos handles over 80 million tonnes of goods annually, with LNG, oil, container and bulk terminals. Beyond this industrial facade, Fos-sur-Mer holds unexpected treasures. The old Provençal village, perched on a limestone hillock, is dominated by the ruins of the Viscounts of Marseille castle (12th century) and the Saint-Sauveur church, offering panoramic views over the Gulf of Fos and the Camargue. The Cavaou beach, to the south of the town, is one of the finest sandy beaches on the coast, 3 km long, bordered by dunes and tamarisk — a little-known haven between Marseille and the Camargue. The Étang de l'Estomac, a protected wetland, is home to flamingos, herons and avocets. Fos hosts a summer beach festival and traditional water jousting. The Fos pine forest, a coastal Aleppo pine woodland, offers shaded walking trails between garrigue and sea.
