Berre-l'Étang, a town of 14,000 on the eastern shore of Europe's largest saltwater lagoon, gave its name to this vast 155 km² body of water that constitutes one of Provence's most singular natural sites. The town occupies a unique position between water and hills, with the old village perched on a rocky mound overlooking the shore and the modern quarters below. The history of Berre-l'Étang is intimately linked to the petrochemical industry: the Berre refinery and chemical complex, among the first in France, were established in the 1930s and shaped the entire region's economy for decades. Today, industrial reconversion is underway, but the Berre-Lavéra-Fos petrochemical basin remains a major economic hub employing thousands of workers. Beyond industry, Berre-l'Étang attracts with its surprising lagoon beaches: Champigny beach, Merveilles beach and Pointe beach offer swimming in the calm waters of the lagoon with views of the Arbois hills and the Estaque range. The old village, crowned by the ruins of the medieval castle and the Saint-Cesaire church (12th century), retains intact Provençal charm with its calade lanes and stone houses. The Marseille-to-Rhône canal, built between 1834 and 1927, crosses the town as a testament to 19th-century navigable ambitions. The lagoon shores host pink flamingos, grey herons and cormorants, making Berre-l'Étang an underappreciated birdwatching site.
