Cabourg is inseparable from Marcel Proust, who stayed here every summer from 1907 to 1914 at the Grand Hôtel, a majestic Belle Époque palace facing the sea that inspired the 'Grand-Hôtel de Balbec' in In Search of Lost Time. The Promenade Marcel Proust runs 3.7 km along the fine sand beach — one of Normandy's longest — offering panoramic views over the mouth of the Dives and the Vaches Noires cliffs to the east. Cabourg is a singular town with its fan-shaped layout: all streets converge on the Grand Hôtel, designed as the resort's focal point by architect Bréasson in 1907. The Cabourg Romantic Film Festival (June) attracts film lovers in an intimate setting, far from the glamour of Cannes and Deauville. Cabourg racecourse hosts trotting races during summer. The neighbouring town of Dives-sur-Mer, across the Dives river, houses the Village Guillaume-le-Conquérant (crafts in the old medieval market hall) and the church of Notre-Dame where a carved list of William's companions who set out to conquer England in 1066 is preserved. A taxi from Caen is the fastest way to reach this small resort which has no direct railway station (the nearest is Dives-Cabourg, served by a few trains).
