Angoulême is world-famous as the capital of comic books thanks to its Festival International de la BD (FIBD), the largest comic book festival in the world, attracting over 200,000 visitors every late January for four days. But Angoulême is much more than a festival: the Cité Internationale de la Bande Dessinée et de l'Image (CIBDI), housed in a former industrial warehouse on the banks of the Charente, is an exceptional permanent museum tracing the history of comics from its origins to the present day, with first-rate temporary exhibitions. The upper town of Angoulême, perched on a rocky promontory 80 metres above the Charente, is encircled by ramparts offering a breathtaking panorama over the valley. The Saint-Pierre Cathedral (12th century), a masterpiece of Poitevin Romanesque art, features a uniquely sculpted facade with over 70 figures depicting the Last Judgement and the Ascension. The Town Hall occupies the former comtal castle (13th-century keep). Throughout the town, giant painted walls illustrated by great comic book names (Hergé, Franquin, Margerin, Bilal) transform Angoulême into an open-air museum. The Painted Walls Trail, a 4 km route through the town, is a unique experience. Angoulême is also a city of innovation: the Pôle Image Magelis brings together animation studios, video games and creative enterprises.
Route
Route Bordeaux → Angoulême
From Bordeaux, your driver takes the northern ring road then the A10 towards Paris. The motorway crosses the Blaye and Haute-Saintonge vineyards. After the Saint-André-de-Cubzac toll, you head north. At Mirambeau, you pass the Saintes junction to continue on the A10. Past Pons and Barbezieux-Saint-Hilaire, you reach the Angoulême-Sud interchange. The N10 then leads directly into town. Arrival in Angoulême is from the lower town, and the climb to the upper town (historic centre and cathedral) is spectacular: the ramparts majestically overlook the Charente valley. A10 tolls amount to approximately €12. The journey takes 1h35 in normal conditions. During the BD Festival (late January, 4 days), allow 15-20 min extra as town traffic is very heavy.

Specific tips for the Bordeaux → Angoulême route
The International BD Festival (late January, 4 days) is the major event: 200,000 visitors, queues for signings, exhibitions throughout the town. Book your taxi 2-3 weeks ahead. Outside the festival, the CIBDI (Comic Book City) is open year-round (€10, 2-3h visit) — a must for enthusiasts. The Painted Walls Trail (4 km, free, map from Tourist Office) is a unique walk: over 25 giant painted walls by renowned comic book artists. The Saint-Pierre Cathedral is a Romanesque wonder (free): its sculpted facade of 70 figures is a book in stone. The ramparts offer a superb panoramic walk over the Charente (1h, free). The Victor Hugo covered market (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday mornings) is excellent for Charente products: cognac, pineau, charentaises (slippers!). Angoulême is also a starting point for a river cruise on the Charente (boats from L'Houmeau port).

The TGV Bordeaux–Angoulême is fast (35 min, frequent, €15-35). It is an excellent rail connection. The TaxiNeo taxi at €180 — €225 is justified for groups (3-4 passengers: €45-75 per person), families with bulky luggage (boxes of comic books!), and especially during the BD Festival when TGVs are full and Angoulême station is packed. Door-to-door is invaluable in a hilly town where the station is at the bottom and the historic centre at the top. By car, expect €16 fuel and €12 tolls.
