Sète is a singular city, built on and around Mont Saint-Clair between the Mediterranean and the Thau lagoon. Nicknamed the 'Venice of Languedoc' for its bridge-crossed canals, it's France's largest Mediterranean fishing port and a stronghold of Occitan culture. Georges Brassens was born here and rests at the Py marine cemetery, facing the sea. Paul Valéry, the other great Sétois, immortalised the marine cemetery in his famous poem. The Sète water jousts, a spectacular tradition where jousters in white try to knock each other into the water from boats, have enlivened the Royal Canal every summer since the 17th century. The Thau lagoon, with its Bouzigues oyster and mussel farms, is Languedoc's largest lagoon and a paradise for shellfish lovers. Taxis from Montpellier are used by gourmets, Brassens fans and summer holidaymakers.

Specific tips for the Montpellier → Sète route
Climb to the top of Mont Saint-Clair (183 m, road or stairs) for a 360° panorama of the sea, Thau lagoon and Pyrenees on clear days. The Py marine cemetery (Brassens' grave) and the marine cemetery (Valéry's poem) are two moving sites. The Sète market halls (Tuesday-Sunday mornings) are a temple of Mediterranean gastronomy: tielle sétoise, zézettes, Bouzigues oysters. For oysters, go directly to the Bouzigues oyster shacks (10 km, on the Thau lagoon shore). The Espace Brassens (€8) traces the poet's life with personal objects and his guitar.
