Arromanches-les-Bains is one of the most moving sites in the history of the Normandy landings. On 6 June 1944, the Allies landed on Gold Beach, and in the following days assembled an artificial harbour of astonishing ingenuity — Mulberry Harbour B — directly in front of the village. This temporary port, made of Phoenix caissons (floating concrete blocks) and floating piers, enabled the unloading of 2.5 million soldiers, 500,000 vehicles and 4 million tonnes of supplies between June and October 1944. Today, the remains of the Phoenix caissons still emerge from the sea at low tide, a striking reminder of Allied logistical genius. The D-Day Museum (the first D-Day museum, opened in 1954) traces the design and construction of the harbour with models, archive films and a fascinating animated scale model. Arromanches 360 circular cinema projects an immersive film on the 100 days of the Battle of Normandy. Arromanches is the ideal starting point for exploring the D-Day beaches: Omaha Beach is 15 km west, Juno Beach 10 km east. A taxi from Caen is essential as Arromanches has no regular public transport.
Route
Route Caen → Arromanches-les-Bains
From Caen, your driver takes the N13 towards Bayeux for 20 km, then turns right onto the D516 heading north towards the coast. The D516 crosses the Bessin, a bocage landscape with stone farms and meadows. You pass through Créully (12th-century castle that served as BBC headquarters during the landings) then descend towards the coast. The arrival at Arromanches along the cliff offers a striking panorama of the bay and the Mulberry Harbour remains. Your driver drops you in the village centre, near the D-Day Museum. No tolls. The journey takes 30 minutes and can reach 45 minutes in peak tourist season (June, especially around 6 June for commemorations).

Specific tips for the Caen → Arromanches-les-Bains route
6 June is the date of D-Day commemorations — official ceremony, vintage military vehicle parade, paratrooper flypast. Book your taxi well in advance for this date. The D-Day Museum (€8.50) takes 1h30 — the animated Mulberry Harbour model is the star attraction. Arromanches 360 (€7, 20 min) is highly immersive — striking archive footage on a 360° circular screen. At low tide, walk down to the beach to approach the Phoenix caissons — some are the size of a 5-storey building. Parking is free but limited in summer (an advantage of taking a taxi). For a complete D-Day circuit by taxi, combine Arromanches, the Longues-sur-Mer Battery (4 km, intact German guns), the American Cemetery at Colleville (20 km) and Pointe du Hoc (25 km). Allow half a day.
